The Institute of Radiation Problems arranged an environmental expedition to the Shusha and Lachin regions

From October 28 to November 4, two environmental expedition teams from the Institute of Radiation Problems conducted research in the Shusha and Lachin regions. The expedition included participation from Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources employees. The research work provided for in the Action Plan for 2023 of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan was carried out on the implementation of the Action Plan of the “I State Program on the Great Return” to the liberated territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Field investigations were carried out in de-occupied regions to ascertain the levels of chemical contaminants and radionuclides in water supplies and bottom sediments, and samples were collected for laboratory analysis. During the expedition, employees of the Radioecology, Radiochemistry and Radioprotectors, as well as the Energy-Saving Radiation Processes Laboratory of the Institute of Radiation Problems, collected soil, water, and bottom sediment samples in the left branch of Gargarchay - Dashalti water sources, in Isabulag, in the administrative buildings of Shusha city, and around the buildings under construction, in the Hekari River in Lachin.

The participants of the expedition also made preliminary observations related to the management of solid household waste in Shusha, and they made plans for launching a propaganda campaign about the development of the "green" economy after the settlement of Shusha and the rehabilitation of the unique ecological culture that existed before the occupation.
