February 11 - International Day of Women and Girls in Science

11.02.2020

By a resolution of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly of December 22, 2015, February 11 was declared International Day for Women and Girls in Science.

Science and gender equality are integral elements of the achievement of development goals, including those set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over the past 15 years, the world community has made significant strides in involving women and girls in science. Despite this, women and girls still face restrictions in this area. Today, less than 30 percent of women are among scientific researchers. Stereotypes and prejudices in society are the main obstacles for girls in science.

Secretary General Antonio Guterres in his address noted that in order to successfully address the challenges of the 21st century, we need to use our full potential. On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let us make a solemn promise to eliminate gender imbalances in science.
