General Meeting of DPMTS discusses current scientific and practical problems of energy security and their solutions

The next online meeting of the General Assembly of the Department of Physical, Mathematical and Technical Sciences (DPMTS) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) was held.

Full and corresponding members of ANAS on DPMTS, general directors and executive directors of scientific institutions, scientific secretaries, heads of education, public relations and international relations departments, as well as representatives of relevant government agencies and officials of scientific institutions and organizations, specialists from Turkey, Germany, Denmark and Norway participated in the event.

At first, the participants observed a minute of silence in memory of academician Anvar Nahmedov and Professor Ogtay Nusratov.

The first issue on the agenda of the online meeting was a scientific report of Academician-Secretary of ANAS, general director of the Institute of Physics, Academician Arif Hashimov and Chief Researcher of “Azerbaijan Scientific-Research and Design-Research Energy Institute” of “Azerenergy” OJSC, a member of the Scientific Council on “Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources” of ANAS, Professor Nariman Rahmanov on “Actual scientific and practical problems of energy security and their solutions: construction of distributed hybrid systems with renewable energy sources (use of solar and wind energy resources in micro-systems for Karabakh-Zangazur zone)”.

Speaking about the current state of energy security in the Republic of Azerbaijan, Academician Arif Hashimov noted that renewable energy sources in our country have a wide range. Academician-Secretary of ANAS reminded of the Orders and State Programs signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev on energy issues in different years:

“Guided by these Orders, which are of great importance for our country, ANAS, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, AzerEnergy OJSC and other relevant agencies have taken targeted measures to develop the use of renewable energy sources. And work is underway in this direction” he said.

Academician Arif Hashimov noted that one of the most important directions in the transformation of the electricity system is the rapid introduction of distributed generation technology with a large number of renewable sources to meet demand in remote areas.

Professor Nariman Rahmanov, in turn, spoke about the current scientific and practical problems of energy security and their solutions, especially the results of the study of the potential of renewable energy sources for the economic zones of Karabakh and East Zangazur. The scientist said that an analysis of the assessment of renewable energy sources, which is characteristic of the geographical and climatic conditions of Karabakh and Zangazur, is underway. According to him, the results of long-term measurements of air parameters, as well as analysis of other types of renewable energy sources show that solar and wind energy have the greatest energy potential in the regions of Karabakh and Zangazur economic zones. Solar energy sources in these areas significantly exceed wind energy reserves.

Professor N.Rahmanov also spoke about the stages of creating a hybrid system of private energy supply in remote areas.

Speaking at the online meeting, Vice President of ANAS, Chairman of DPMTS, Academician Rasim Alguliyev referred to the speech of President Ilham Aliyev in video format at the annual general discussions of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly a few days ago and drew attention to the President’s statement on the declaration of Karabakh and East Zangazur Green Energy Zone, the renewable energy potential of the liberated territories of Azerbaijan.

According to Academician Rasim Alguliyev, modern challenges to global climate change, as well as the Green Energy Policy, which is in the focus of Mr. President, put important tasks in front of our scientists and require a comprehensive approach to energy security in our country. The scientist noted that ensuring the energy security of the Republic, the establishment of smart systems related to renewable energy sources, conducting research in this area, as well as staff training, etc. issues necessitate the development of the “National Strategy for Energy Security of the Republic of Azerbaijan.”

In addition, Academician Rasim Alguliyev stressed the importance of holding joint scientific-practical conferences, seminars and meetings to discuss current scientific and practical problems of energy security, their solutions, as well as multidisciplinary study of renewable energy potential of our country, to further deepen cooperation with relevant research institutions.

Academician Rasim Alguliyev also stressed that the geopolitical interests of our country, the policy pursued by the President in this direction require special attention to the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of energy security.

Chairman of the National Center for Nuclear Research, Academician Adil Garibov, Professor of Gazi University of Turkey, Cengiz Taplamacioglu, Academicians - Fikret Aliyev, Javad Abdinov, corresponding members of ANAS - Oktay Gasimov and Namig Jalilov spoke at the discussions around the report.

Reporting on the results of the discussions and the work done in the report on the implementation of the Action Plan of the Scientific Council on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources of ANAS, expanding cooperation with leading international scientific centers in the discussed scientific areas, stuff training in this field, conducting multidisciplinary scientific research, as well as organizing conferences and seminars were decided at the meeting.

The General Meeting of the DPMTS, which discusses issues related to scientific monographs, decided to raise petition for the publication of a book by academician Adil Garibov entitled “Practical neutron and nuclear reactor physics. The use of nuclear energy:status, problems and prospects”, as well as the monograph “Waves and nuclear energy” by Doctor of Physical Sciences Jabir Ismayilov and Doctor of Philosophy in Physics Elmar Askerov.

Then, issues related to the 80th anniversary of academician Mahammad Mehdiyev and corresponding member of ANAS Mahmud Abdullayev, 75th anniversary of corresponding members of ANAS Misir Mardanov and 70th anniversary of Masuma Mammadova were discussed at the General Meeting of DPMTS.

Speaking about this, the members of DPMTS spoke about the important contributions of each jubilee to our science and the noble human qualities. It was decided to submit a petition to the Presidium of ANAS to hold the anniversary of the mentioned scientists.

At the request of the Institute of Radiation Problems of ANAS, the General Meeting of DPMTS decided to hold a Republican scientific and technical conference on “Radiological and chemical risks in the liberated territories”. Giving information about it, General Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of ANAS, corresponding member Islam Mustafayev noted that the theme of the conference is the work envisaged in the document “Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for Socio-Economic Development”.

According to other decisions made at the online meeting, Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists of the Institute of Physics of ANAS and leading researcher, Doctor of Philosophy in Physics Ulker Samadova, as well as junior researcher and full-time doctoral student Asif Asadov in Dubna, Russia are sent to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The General Meeting of DPMTS also adopted relevant decisions on a number of personnel issues.

At the end, current issues that need to be addressed were discussed and questions were answered.
