INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS AND AGREEMENTS IMPLEMENTED AT THE INSTITUTE OF RADIATION PROBLEMS

The Institute of Radiation Problems of ANAS works within the framework of international programs with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Department of Nuclear Security of the United States Department of Energy, NATO, the US Civilian Research Foundation CRDF to ensure the integration of research into the world science in the areas of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, radiation safety, radioecology, radiation effects of solids and radiation materials science.

1. The US Department of Energy, under the Department of Nuclear Safety's International Radiological Threat Reduction Project, provides scientific and methodological guidance for strengthening the physical protection of radioactive materials, sources, and facilities in the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2005, the physical protection of radioactive sources in the Republic was strengthened and the construction of a special warehouse for the storage of high-level radioactive materials has been underway since 2006 to strengthen the physical protection of existing facilities in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Work on the contract is underway.

2. The United States CRDF Foundation is implementing the Physical Environment Research Center project, which will run from 2002 to 2016. Funding for this agreement was completed in 2006. In the following years, the operation of the purchased equipment is monitored.

3. UETM 5075 project (together with the Institute of Physics of ANAS) The duration of the project is 2009-2012. The amount of the project - US $ 100,000 (one hundred thousand). It ended in September this year.

4. UETM 4618 project (together with the Institute of Zoology of ANAS) The duration of the project is 2009-2012. The amount of the project-US $ 240,000. It was completed in August this year.

5. UETM 3913 project (together with the Institute of Zoology of ANAS) The duration of the project is 2009-2012. The project cost $ 260,000. The project was completed in September.

6. UETM 5026 project (together with the Institute of Botany of ANAS) Project duration is 2011-2013. The cost of the project is 174,000 euro.

7. UETM-5590 project (together with the Institute of Microbiology of ANAS) The duration of the project is 12 months. The project cost is $ 95,410. ($ 31,092 for RPI)

8. UETM - P461 project (Partner project) Increasing national capabilities and experience in the field of nuclear expertise, Project duration - 2 years (2012-2013), Project amount - $ 40,000.
As the projects with the Ukrainian Scientific and Technical Center are implemented jointly with other institutes, the Institute receives only 30% of its funding.

9. AZB002 project within the framework of the Technical Cooperation Program with the IAEA “Creation of a gamma-radiation complex for sterilization of food, medical materials and materials, polymers and construction materials through radiation technologies”. The project amount is 186,000 USD. The duration of the project is 2009-2011. The project has been extended.
A plot of land has been allocated for the establishment of a gamma radiation complex, the area has been fenced, a road has been built to the area, and design estimates for water, gas, electricity and telecommunication lines have been prepared. Under this project, young employees of the Institute were sent to training courses at radiation sterilization facilities operating in Ankara, Turkey, Budapest, Hungary and Warsaw, Poland.
By the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 177s dated July 4, 2011, funds were allocated to ANAS for the purpose of carrying out preliminary construction works on the projects "Expansion of radiation processes - creation of sterilization device". In order to increase the efficiency and radiation quality of the complex's radiation facility, funds were allocated and paid for the installation of additional isotope sources through the IAEA Technical Cooperation Department. Design and estimate documents of the complex have been developed, communication lines are being built. From 2013, the laboratory building will be built. The complex's radiation and transport systems will be ready in 2013.

10. Installation of radiation detection equipment at the state border checkpoints of the Republic of Azerbaijan is carried out within the framework of the Second Line Defense Program of the National Nuclear Security Administration of the US Department of Energy and According to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 17/1745-95-22/11 dated November 29, 2007, The Institute of Radiation Problems of ANAS has been appointed an authorized body for calibration and repair of radiation detection devices, as well as training in the field of operation of these devices. Employees of the Institute's Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety underwent relevant training within the Second Line of Defense Program and regularly operate and calibrates radiation-detecting equipment and devices installed at the boundaries. At present, this work is being successfully continued.

11. The institute participated in the grant competition held by the Science Development Foundation, and in 2011 three projects won the competition. In 2012, the projects were successfully implemented.

• "Inventory of waste sources and environmental monitoring along the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Oil Pipeline” (60,000)

• “Obtaining new effective sorbents for the separation of natural radioactive radium isotopes and studying their sorption patterns” (AZN 200,000)

• Purchase of mesoscopic nanostructures and development of Teraherts Blox generator based on them (60,000 AZN)

12. In 2012, 2 employees of the institute became the winners of the grant competition of young scientists and specialists held by the "Science Development Foundation".

• Grant № EIF/GAM-1-2011-2(4)-26/07/2- Geological and ecological aspects of radiogeochemical areas of urbanized areas on the example of Greater Baku, the project implementation period is 18 months. The cost of the project is 30,000 AZN. The project is implemented jointly with the Institute of Geology of ANAS.
